As of June 30, 2014, multiplayer for games like Battlefront, Battlefront II, older Battlefield games, Command & Conquer, and other EA games will be discontinued due to a massive GameSpy server shutdown.
Glu Mobile, who acquired GameSpy Technology in 2012, told Gamasutra, “The GameSpy business itself proved to no longer be a viable business model, leading to Glu’s decision to sunset the hosting business.”
In April, EA said in a tweet they were, “working on transitioning those games after the shut down so you’ll still be able to play them.” Specifically, they were referring to the earlier Battlefield games like Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2, but now it looks like that transition has yet to come.
Fortunately, Battlefront II’s multiplayer will still function through GameRanger, as noted by GameRanger creator Scott Kevill in a Reddit post, “As mentioned elsewhere, people are already playing it just fine on GameRanger, and will continue to after May 31. (I’ve already simulated it with GameSpy blocked and cut-off.)”
